Please find below a message from LPO on the large numbers of seabirds that have washed ashore along the French Atlantic coast in the last few weeks. It may be of direct relevance to some of you in the region who are perhaps witnessing similar events:
During the last few weeks there have been thousands of seabirds, particularly auks (Fratercula arctica,  Uria aalge, Alca torda) washing up along the French Atlantic coastline, either dead or extremely exhausted. Up to the 24th of February, LPO has estimated that over 25,000 birds have been affected. Below is a table outlining the numbers of birds per species. The original table in French is attached.
This event appears to have been caused by the current bad weather conditions, including numerous low pressure systems and strong swell which is affecting the Bay of Biscay. The birds are extremely weak and are arriving on the beaches either dead or exhausted. To date, in at least 5% of cases the birds are oiled. However in the last few days, large extents of the French coast have witnessed similar oil pollution.
